Metal Finishing – Plating & Coating

Titanium Anodizing

Surface conditioning and color coding of titanium parts through oxide growth; used in aerospace and medical applications.

Metal Finishing – Plating & Coating

Process

An electrolytic process controlling the oxide layer on titanium with electric current. Used in aerospace for corrosion and physical durability, and in medical applications for its non-toxic nature.

What it provides

  • Type II: anti-galling and wear resistance
  • Type III: colour coding for part identification
  • Surface conditioning without dimensional change

Frequently asked questions

How are titanium anodize colours produced?

In Type III anodizing the oxide thickness is set by voltage and produces gold, purple, blue or green by light interference. It is not a paint; AMS-2488 defines it for part identification.

What does Type II anodizing provide?

A thicker, matte oxide with anti-galling and wear resistance, used on titanium fasteners and threaded surfaces.
