Process
Phosphating forms a protective film of insulating, water-insoluble phosphate crystals on the metal surface. Improves paint adhesion and provides a base for rust-preventive oils. Applied as manganese phosphate or zinc phosphate.

What is the difference between zinc and manganese phosphate?
Zinc phosphate is for paint adhesion and light corrosion protection; manganese phosphate is heavier and oil-retaining, giving break-in wear resistance on sliding surfaces. MIL-DTL-16232 covers both.
Is the phosphate oiled afterwards?
Where the specification calls for it a preservative oil or solid-film lubricant is applied; common on weapon and mechanism parts.
