What is the difference between electrolytic and electroless nickel?

Electrolytic nickel is deposited with current, so thickness follows current distribution: heavier on outer surfaces, thinner in recesses. Electroless nickel is autocatalytic and builds an even thickness everywhere, including bores. Electrolytic suits wear and decorative work; electroless suits complex geometry.

What thicknesses are applied?

Typically 5–50 µm to specification; heavier build-up is possible for repair. Thickness is measured by X-ray fluorescence and reported.
